Considerations and Tips for Making Pineapple BBQ Sauce
I used bottled pineapple juice to make the sauce, but you can use fresh pineapple, juiced. I've also used canned pineapple nectar. Likewise if you wanted a different flavor profile you could use a peach or mango juice in combination with pineapple juice or as an alternative to.
Tweak the ingredient ratios to get the desired flavor profile.
Piloncillo is great as a sweetener and for adding more complex flavor. You can find it in the spice or baking aisle in most large format grocery stores. Feel free to substitute with molasses or brown sugar if it's not available to you.
The sauce will thicken the longer it cooks, but if you're short on time make a slurry and add to the sauce as a thickener. Slurries are simply a mix of water and cor starch.
This sauce stores well in mason jars.
Add some hot sauce for a hint of spice unless you add a lot!
This is a pretty versatile barbecue sauce recipe. Use it on smoked pork ribs, barbecue chicken breasts, chicken wings, pork chops, or on anything else you normally put regular bbq sauce on.
Don't forget to checkout my BBQ side dish guide for tips on pairing with BBQ meats.
It also works well as a great basting sauce or general grilling sauce.
Be sure to taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning to your liking.
If you want a thinner sauce, you can add additional pineapple juice or water.
For a spicier sauce, you can add more black pepper or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
