"How To Get By" Grilled Fennel

Grilling vegetables should be a thing and grilled fennel should be at the top of the list. It’s a quick and easy action, but high upside side dish with super-strong health credentials.

The beauty of grilled fennel is that it doesn’t require any other ingredients. The high heat minimizes the bitter licorice flavor while pulling out the sweetness. When paired with a grassy or herbal sauce like chimichurri, you have simple elegance.

MOOD MUSIC

This recipe stripped down to its very last compound is just fennel and fire. Yet it's still comforting and brings some light to your days. It may help you do more than get by. The beats on this song are simple and clean allowing the vocals to shine through in a way that sooths and inspires.

How To Grill Fennel

Cut The Fennel

The key to this dish is cutting it correctly. See video example in recipe card at the end of the post.

Season the Fennel

Simply season with olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Grill the Fennel

Prepare grill for high heat. Grill the fennel for about 5 minutes per side.

Remove and serve with your choice of sauce.

Recipe Considerations and Tips

Grill indoor or outdoor. To grill indoor use a grill pan at medium high heat. For outdoors make sure the grill grate is well heated before adding the fennel. Hot grates equal less sticking and nice grill marks.

For sauce options, I definitely recommend an herb based vinaigrette type. Chimichurri or zhug sauce are great matches and ideal given its simplicity.

Don’t slice the fennel too thin. Thicker cuts are better as they hold up better to the high heat that’s required for the dish.
