Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Cooking Oatmeal

How do I make oatmeal without milk?

If you're looking for a dairy-free oatmeal recipe, simply substitute the milk for water or any type of non-dairy milk. Coconut milk, almond milk, and soy milk are all great choices.

What are the best types of oats for making creamy oatmeal?

I prefer plain old-fashioned oats. They cook quickly and absorb the liquid easily. But steel cut oats or Irish oats could work. Steel-cut oats will have a more chewy texture and will require a bit more liquid for an extra creamy oatmeal. I don't recommend instant oats for this recipe as you will struggle to get the consistency right.

Can I use fresh berries instead of frozen?

Yes! Fresh or frozen berries will both work well in this recipe. If you're using fresh berries, you may want to add a little bit more sweetener to the oatmeal since they won't be as sweet as frozen berries.

What if I don't have maple syrup?

No problem! Brown sugar, Honey or agave nectar are both great substitutes for maple syrup.

What are other good toppings for Oatmeal?

I like cocoa nibs, peanut butter, chia seeds, and fresh fruit as my toppings of choice.
