"first class" apple cinnamon oatmeal

Definitely the best ever apple cinnamon oatmeal you’ll taste. It’s creamy, fragrant, and flavorful featuring old-fashioned oats cooked on the stovetop in an almond-milk and apple juice-based broth.

This is first class oatmeal. The flavors scream fall, but it's all good, all year round.

oatmeal ingredients

  • Old-Fashioned Oats
  • Apples
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Apple Juice
  • Almond Milk
  • Nutmeg
  • Maple Syrup or Molasses

how to cook oatmeal in fruit juice (step by step)

There is nothing tricky about cooking oatmeal in a non-water/non-dairy based liquid. It’s the same directions just a different liquid source. For next-level flavor I like to toast the oats a little in ghee or regular butter before cooking.

So this recipe calls for an even split of almond milk and apple juice. The sautéed apples with apple juice gives you double the apple flavor and spices give it complexity and aroma.

serving suggestion

Serve as is since there is so much flavor already. Feel free to sprinkle some more cinnamon on top. The heat from the oatmeal will open the cinnamon flavor up.

tips for making oatmeal

  • Change the ratio for apple juice: almond milk as you see fit and depending on your taste profile
  • Add a dollop of Greek yogurt to the finished oatmeal for additional creaminess and more protein
  • Use best apple juice you can afford.
  • Toast the oats in butter first. This adds a ton of flavor. Toasting brings out the oatiness, and butter is butter!

frequently asked questions (faqs)

What kind of oats work best?

Old fashioned or quick oats are your best bests. You don’t have to cook them, but they easily blend. Steel cuts you should avoid unless you don’t mind a very chewy and grainy smoothie.

Can this recipe be converted to overnight oats?

Yes, this can be done rather easily. You’ll have to definitely exclude the basil, but everything else will be the same. Just mix the orange juice, almond milk, and honey well then mix in the oats and refrigerate overnight. Add the zest before serving.

Will this work in an Instant Pot?

This is easily done in Instant Pot. It’s actually my preferred way, especially with a cinnamon stick dropped in during cooking.

How do you make this in the instant pot?

Hi this is the approach i typically take for cooking oatmeal in my Instant Pot:

Turn on Sauté button on your Instant Pot and set to High. Once display reads “Hot” Add the ghee. Once ghee is melted add the spices and oats and toast for 1 minute stirring as needed to heat all the oats.
Hit the Cancel button on the IP to turn off the heat. Add the almond milk, apple juice and salt to the IP.
Place the IP lid on, and make sure the steam release valve is sealed. Pressure cook for 3 minutes. When it’s done pressure cooking, let the steam naturally release for 10 minutes.
Hit the quick release. After the float valve has gone down, remove the lid, add the maple and very carefully stir to fully combine liquid and oatmeal. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
